যেমন, Sinhala Only Act।
কুমার সাঙ্গাকারা তাঁর কাউড্রি মেমোরিয়াল লেকচারে শ্রীলঙ্কায় ক্রিকেটের গোড়াপত্তনের কথা বলেছেন, “Cricket club were formed around the dawn of the 20th century, designed to cater for the school leavers of affluent colleges. The clubs bore communal names like the Sinhala Sports Club (SSC), Tamil Union, Burgher Recreation, and the Moors Club, but if they were considered together they were all uniformly cultured with Anglicized values.”
সাঙ্গাকারা বলছেন, “I guess we were in many ways like the early West Indian teams: Calypso cricketers, who played the game as entertainers and lost more often than not albeit gracefully. What we needed at the time was a leader. A cricketer from the masses who had the character, the ability and above all the courage and gall to change a system…”
সাঙ্গাকারা’র লেকচার-ও শেষ হয় এই ঐক্যের কথা দিয়েই, “My responsibility as a Sri Lankan cricketer is to further enrich this beautiful sport, to add to it and enhance it and to leave a richer legacy for other cricketers to follow…I will do that by keeping paramount in my mind my Sri Lankan identity…My loyalty will be to the ordinary Sri Lankan fan…fans of different castes, ethnicities and religions who together celebrate their diversity by uniting for a common national cause. They are my foundation, they are my family…I am Tamil, Sinhalese, Muslim and Burgher. I am a Buddhist, a Hindu, a follower of Islam and Christianity. I am today, and always, proudly Sri Lankan.”
তৎকালীন ক্রীড়ামন্ত্রী উমা ভারতী বলেছিলেন, “We see cricket not just as a game but as a symbol of a nation’s sentiments.”
শারদা উগ্রা জানাচ্ছেন, ১৯৮৭ সালের একটি পোস্টারে কপিল দেব (হিন্দু), আজহার (মুসলমান), রজার বিনি (ক্রিশ্চান) এবং মনিন্দর সিং (শিখ)-এর ছবি’র তলায় লেখা ছিল- “If we can play together, we can live together.” উগ্রা তাঁর প্রবন্ধের শেষে যে কথাটা বলেছেন, ভারতীয় ক্রিকেট বিষয়ে আলোচনায় ইতি টানবার জন্য তা বেশ উপযুক্ত, “In Indian public life, cricket is everything, except just the game it needs to be.”

  1. Ah, yet another article condemning cricket in India, sparing neither its players nor its supporters, although admittedly, a fluent, well-written piece as expected from someone as academically accomplished. It is, perhaps, nothing short of impertinence on my part to even try to write a polemic of a seemingly well thought of article. But frankly I am quite tired not only of the patronizing attitude of the people academically well endowed but also of using Cricket as a mean to achieve so (I must confess, being so mundane and obtuse as I am, it is entirely possible that I ‘didn’t quite get it’).
At first glance, your article does have the appearance of a logical, eloquent one adorned with appropriate analogies, quotes from experts of the field and befitting references. But once we scrape of the luster, separate the sheen from the substance what remains is best described by Vinny Gambini from My Cousin Vinny “ He’s going to show you the bricks with straight sides and the right shape. But when you look at the bricks from the right angle, they’re as thin as this playing card. His whole case is an illusion, a magic trick.” I am paraphrasing of course, but it adequately puts the point across.
The article starts with mocking the concept of team India then moves on to proving claiming how just by playing Cricket one apparently alienates themselves from the poor as according to you “ক্রিকেট গরীব মানুষের খেলা নয়” I am sorry, but such ‘blanket’ statement makes me wonder whether you are really qualified to even discuss cricket. So many successful cricketers have come from not-so-well-to-do families that making such a cliched statement only exposes your ignorance of cricket. Have you heard of the small incident termed “The Bodyline Series”? The’ main man’ of English captain Douglas Jardine to employ this ‘strategy’ was Harold Larwood. He grew up with four brothers in a family provided for by his coal miner father. He had to start working for a living at the age of 13! Yet he turned out to be the bowler to destroy Sir Donald Bradman, arguably the best batsman the world has ever seen. What’s that you say? “This was possible in early phases of cricket without all the completion to take a share of the money from the sponsors” (which, incidentally, according to you is virtually same as selling your soul to the Devil!). Let us look at the current crop of Indian cricketers, Umesh Yadav, again son of a coal miner. Hero no but an indispensable part of team India’s exquisite pace bowling attack in the past world cup. Pathan brothers, Irfan only bowler in the history of the game to take a hat trick in the first over of a test match and Yousuf fastest fifty in IPL. Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammad, Shami, Manoj Tiwary, the list could go on but I have made my point.
You also pose two distinct questions and provide answers to them to dissect out the intent behind the design of some ‘evil’ advertisements that apparently disseminated religious discord. If we are to go by your logic, those ads represent a Pakistani supporter just because it’s very easy to sell anything in the free market if you ’tickle’ the religious sentiment of the ‘customers’. Now where in the ads was it depicted that he was a Muslim? If his religion wasn’t overtly displayed where does the issue of religious enmity come from so stop trying to make it such (again it may be my ineptitude to fully comprehend the sinister motive behind the ads)? As for the second one, you try to prove that citizens of one country need not necessarily support their own country. Whether that conclusion holds water is beyond the scope of this writing. However, the analogies you provide do give rise to the suspicion that you do not fully grasp the concept of ‘argument from analogy because the ones you use are prime examples of ‘false analogy’. ‘ a little more closely. You are comparing tennis to cricket! Only three international tennis tournaments (and Olympics of course) are played on country-by-country basis. So in realty, in almost all cases when you are supporting Nadal or Federar for that matter you are rooting for that person and that person and not Spain or Switzerland. In cricket, even with your limited knowledge, I hope you can guess the situation is somewhat different. Also it appears, to you India-Spain relationship are analogous to India-Pakistan relationship. (I didn’t want to use this word but) Seriously!! If you really don’t understand that history between two countries dictate their current outlook towards each other, just ask an Ukrainian about Russia, or an Argentine about England, or a Palestine about Israel.
What you say about the West Indian and Sri Lankan cricket team is true enough however, without going into details, lets just say your argument and supporting evidence are replete with large, gaping holes. Also as far as I know none of the Sri Lankan spoke up against the Tamil genocide under the rule of Mahendra Rajapakshe. I would of course love to be proved wrong at least this once. So please provide any information you have on this topic. The other point, if there is really a point, is, as they say, ‘full of contradiction’. It seems you are already prejudiced against the Indian cricket team. You are ‘hell bent’ to prove that nothing good came of or from them. Cricket apparently played a pivotal part in aggravating the enmity between India and Pakistan. Of course, and the current state of affair had nothing to do with the several wars raged between them or the constant tension between them in the issue of Kashmir or the fact that Pakistan has provided safe haven for one of India’s most wanted terrorists. You say no cricketer has ever done to strengthen the religious unity in India and you provide the evidence they have, albeit it’s not enough according to you. I also don’t see why cricketers should bear additional responsibility to any other crowd puller of India to do the same. In an ideal world, Cricket or any other sports, could theoretically be used to pacify growing tension between two countries. But unfortunately we do not have a perfect world. Playing Cricket would do nothing to resolve the issues the politicians have to stay at the helm of power so would be less than helpful in stopping a war such as the one Kargil. I cannot and do not speak for all Indians but I do speak for those I have personally witnessed to have ben touched by cricket. Yes we belong to that group of who haven’t achieved anything significant in their life, who just work everyday relentlessly so that at least the dreams of their children will become a reality. To us, when team India wins a match we feel like we have achieved something special. To us Cricket has been the best ant-depressant.
As I said, I am academically crippled. So I haven’t read any of the serious and poignant books you refer. And quite unsurprisingly, my favourite series is Harry Potter. However, there is a statement made by the character of Ginny Weasly which I think captures how I feel about your argument rather well. She said, and again I am paraphrasing, “ Stop acting like you understand Quidditch, Hermione”. You should also listen to her advice and stop using Cricket or any other popular subject, to prove that you not only do not share the mentality of the masses but also your thoughts and ideas are above and beyond of what we, the lesser people, can even dream of because you know #it’snotcricket.

    1. Dear friend, thanks for stopping by and thanks for your comment. What is the point of publishing articles if there are no questions raised! 🙂 . The books (and movie) that Sarbajaya mentions here are not that particularly serious or poignant though. Since you are a cricket fan, you would surely find Fire of Babylon and Beyond the Boundary quite enjoyable.
We do believe that cricket, or for that matter anything at all, is not just what five or a hundred or a million people perceive it to be. Every single action or object has its manifold politics. We respect yours. We are grateful to you for the time and energy that you spent to read and to reciprocate.
But enough of us. We are happy to convey what Sarbajya Bhattacharya, the author of this article would like to say in order to take this discussion forward –
“1. It was not my intention to claim that playing cricket alienates one from the poor and whether or not it actually does so is another story to be argued somewhere else. What I intended to argue was the fact that the sport is expensive. It might not be unique in this aspect, but it is expensive. This is not to say that people from economically backward groups do not or cannot play cricket. They can. They have. But it is also an undeniable fact that while many sports persons in India struggle due to the lack of funds, cricketers rake in more money than these players can imagine. And it is also a reality that this money comes from commercials. I have tried, therefore, to speak out against commercialization, against the commodification of players, and a sport. I had hoped to make this quite clear.
      2. Nowhere in the article have I stated that the man in the commercials is a Muslim. What I have stated is what the commercial itself tells the viewer- that he lives in Karachi, and supports Pakistan. I have also not written anything about tickling the ‘religious’ sentiments of the consumer in the beginning, but have spoken of communalism which is not restricted to religion alone, but may be extended to show differences based on ethnicity. Overall, I have tried to criticise the way in which communalism, in some cases, is often narrowed down to a Hindu-Muslim binary, how India and Pakistan become synonymous with two different religions, and how a certain kind of politics encourages such binary formations and tries to reap benefits from creating divides. In the process, I have tried to show the way in which the mixing of religion with nationalism and sports in harmful and dangerous.
      3. I do not need to prove that as citizens of India, for instance, we have to support India at every stage. My point is that as individuals, we should have the choice to make a choice. I should not be branded a ‘traitor’ because I do not support the India’s men’s cricket team at the world stage. My aim was to establish this point, not worry about comparing tennis and cricket.
      4. About Sri Lankan cricket, I have tried to show that the team could stick together with people from different identities in spite of a civil war. I have not claimed that all or any Sri Lankan cricketer has made sensitive remarks about any period of Sri Lanka’s violent history, but that their cricket spoke for itself at a given period of time. To argue that we cannot criticise Indian cricketers for not speaking up against religious intolerance or communal violence because Sri Lankan cricketers did not take a stand in their own country seems like a weak argument.
      5. I have nothing against those who choose to support India in the arena of world cricket. I have nothing against the teams. But I am against jingoism, fanaticism, the language of violence and hate that surrounds cricket fandom in India. I am against equating cricket with religion. I am against equating anything with religion. I am against public personalities shrugging off responsibilities, forgetting that as public figures they have the power to influence the minds of the masses.
      6. Cricket is such a big deal in this country that everyone has an opinion. I have only tried to add my own understanding of cricket to a long tradition of formal and informal discussions about cricket in India. This article is a reflection of my opinion and nothing else.
      7. I too am a fan of the Harry Potter series.”
      – Sarbajaya

  2. 1. I believe you when you say your intention was just to say that cricket is expensive. In your original article, however, your intention was hard to visualize (I agree with the sorry state of my literature skill, I may not have understood your refined analysis completely). You even mention how football, in comparison, requires much less (financial) resources, presumably to prove Cricket is not a sport for the underprivileged though it was not your intention. Perhaps there may not have been such a huge gap between your intention and your writing had you not tried so hard to stick to the ideologies prevalent among your peers. Ideologies that would have us believe that every sport
You also complain how cricketers ‘rake in money” while there is a dearth of funding in other sports. It is true. Is it fair? Of course not! But why should it be? All sports would be treated equally probably in a ‘communist’ (?) world (never really studied political systems, may be some other ‘ist’!). Unfortunately (or fortunately) we do not live in such a world order. Cricket had to work hard to increase its value in this free market. So why should it not reap the rewards now? While Cricket altered its strategies to market itself better, other sports remain emerged in petty politics and age-old policies. One good example of how the mindset changes everything is the Indian Super League that brought about such enthusiasm rarely seen in recent years. Indeed, looking at the state of Football in India right now it’s hard to believe we were once a dominant force in Asian football. I am sure you would criticize ISL too citing how it is also highly commercialized. But you can’t have you cake and eat it too! You either prepare yourself so that who have the money are willing to spend it for you (of course they benefit from it too) or you continue to “struggle due to the lack of funds”.
    2. Of course you haven’t stated that the man is Muslim, ‘directly’. But according to you those series of advertisements are actually an embodiment of the idea that narrows ‘down to a Hindu-Muslim binary……… two different religions’. As far I can see, you haven’t provided any tangible proof how the ads imply that. It’s you who is inferring! In the episode “Chef Goes Nanners” of the series South Park, it is shown how even a flag depicting four white figures hanging a black one on a gallows is not perceived as a racial issue by the children before it is pointed out to them by the more ‘sensitive’ adults! I don’t know about the whole Muslim community of India but I have a few Muslim friends, Indian and otherwise, none of them see these ads how you depict them to be. To them, they are just ads exaggerating the completion and sentiment between two competing nations. Cricket world cup is a competition after all! And as for the other team being Pakistan only, it may be because of the history the two countries share, which however unfortunate would always be there. But it may also be for the simple cricketing reason that Pakistan never won a match against India in the world cup just as India failed to beat South Africa, which was indeed the other team in the ads!
    3. Few things,
You indeed have the choice to support anyone in any circumstance be it competitive sport or war. But utilizing that same freedom, rest of us (or even any or one of us) has the right to brand you traitor or whatever they wish to as long as they are within the boundaries of law. It’s foolish and arrogant to think you can exercise your fundamental right to freedom while others can’t.
At the same time, not supporting India and supporting Pakistan are not the same thing. Supporting Pakistan is considered blasphemy in India, just not supporting India is not. And as I said in previous writing, it’s not that difficult to find pairs of countries where such feeing exists mutually. Although you were not explicit about supporting Pakistan, just wanted to make that clear anyway.
Again as I said previously, “Whether that conclusion holds water is beyond the scope of this writing. However, the analogies you provide do give rise to the suspicion that you do not fully grasp the concept of ‘argument from analogy because the ones you use are prime examples of ‘false analogy’.”
IF IT WAS NOT CLEAR ENOUGH LAST TIME. NO MATTER WHAT YOU WANTED TO PROVE, THE ARGUMENT YOU USED TO PROVE YOUR POINT WAS WEAK, UNNECESSARY AND FAR FETCHED.
    4. If you don’t think, that cricket in India has not played its part in unifying India, may be you need to study a little more about the history of Indian Cricket. The essays of Ramachandra Guha would not be a bad place to start.
Of course it’s a weak argument and not one I was trying to make. I was trying to point out Sri Lankan cricketers may not be as different from their Indian counter parts as you try to prove them to be. However, I really would have loved to be proven wrong about how no Sri Lankan cricketer spoke out against the Tamil genocide.
    5. Mostly I agree, except I don’t see why public personates should bear more responsibility to make the society better than any one else. Just because they have the power to do so doesn’t mean they should or they would. In a perfect, ideal world may be, but not the one we live in.
    6. As was my reply.
    7. They are good, right!
